Making the Difficult Decision to Postpone our Vacation

We did not spend this past week anything like we had planned. We were excited to finally go on vacation somewhere warm and get a break from all this dreary weather at home on the East Coast. Unfortunately, thanks to Covid (more specifically the Omnicron variant) we decided to postpone our trip to Costa Rica.

Unfortunately these are the times we are currently living in and we had to make some last minute changes to our plans because the Omnicron variant is so contagious and I was worried about traveling with an unvaccinated toddler (she’s only 18 months old). Had it not been for this latest spike and super contagious variant going around, we would have traveled to Costa Rica.

I was most worried about having to test negative before returning to the states. Not that we would have been doing anything reckless and we would have tried to be as safe as possible, but if any of us caught it we’d be stuck in a foreign country. We didn’t want to be stressed out or on edge the entire week we were there so we thought it didn’t make sense to go now. Also, what happens if Mackenzie got sick while we were there? (Lucky for us, she got sick a couple of days before we were supposed to leave so either way we weren’t going to be able to make our trip work!)

I know plenty of people who traveled over the last few weeks while the Covid cases were spiking and I’m glad that no one I know has gotten stuck in another country or gotten super sick. I also don’t know many people who traveled out of the country with an unvaccinated toddler and at the end of the day that’s what it came down to. If it were just Greg and I traveling I wouldn’t have been so worried because we’re vaccinated, but we just couldn’t take any risks with Mackenzie and her health. We feel good about our decision and hope to rebook our trip in a couple of months!

Even though we didn’t get to go to Costa Rica, we did try to make the best of our week at home once Mackenzie was feeling better.

I made it a goal to try to clean up and organize each room in our home and I feel pretty good for accomplishing it (also, big thanks to Greg for putting up with my grand ideas).

We took Mackenzie to a farm in Easton, Connecticut called Silverman’s Farm and it’s a great place for kids. We also went to our local beach. It’s definitely not beach weather, but it was fun to take a walk in the sand with our rain boots on and we even got to see some horses!

Did any of your plans change this past week due to the spike in Covid cases and the super contagious strain?
