Awesome Children’s Book Subscription Service
As a former preschool special education teacher, you can imagine I have read many children’s books. I absolutely love the classics like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, but what I love even more than the classics is discovering new books I have never heard of before! That’s where Split Rock Books and their book subscription services comes in. They are a small business in Cold Spring, New York and can ship you any books they carry.
My sister-in-law gifted M a picture book subscription for the holidays and I loved the idea so much, we purchased a board book subscription as well! Split Rock Books subscriptions get shipped the first week of every month. I love that all the books we have received so far are all books we don’t have and they are also extremely diverse [which I love]!
They offer so many options for book subscriptions: kids, adult, and custom options! Within the kids option you can choose board book, picture book, book and activity (ages 5-8), or middle reader (8-12). You then choose if you want to do a 6 month or 1 year subscription by mail or pick up. We have both the board book and picture book and I can vouch that the ones they send are great reads for your little ones! Check out their site if you are interested in a book subscription for your child. It also makes a great gift!
I’ll break down the books we’ve received so far below:
January 2021 Picture Book: Just In Case You Want to Fly by Julie Fogliano and Christian Robinson
This was the first book we received in January and even though it’s a picture book and not a board book, it is appropriate for M. It only has a few words per page, a great rhyming pattern, and simple pictures for M to look at. We read this regularly before her naps!
February 2021 Picture Book: Milo Imagines The World by Matt de la Pena
This picture book would be great for a toddler, but not for M right now since she’s so young. It will go in her closet with all her other books that are a little advanced for her at this age (7 months), but I loved the story and bright, colorful pictures on each page and I know it will be a good read when M is a little older and can sit for a more elaborate book!
February 2021 Board Book: Brilliant Baby Plays Music by Laura Gehl
We LOVE this board book! There are few words per page with great, colorful pictures to describe what is happening on each page. The pages are thick so M can turn them (or close the book which she loves to do) and once again Split Rock Books sent a book with such great diversity. I love that M has tons of books where she can see children of all different races even before she starts going to school! This book is part of a series of books and in September they are releasing Brilliant Baby Fights Germs!
