Everything We Have At Home To Potty Train Our Toddler
Even though we’ve hit the pause button on potty training for right now, I wanted to share all the things we have at home to help expose her & eventually use when the time comes.
Potty seat (either one for the big toilet or a small potty that sits on the floor)- depending on how many toilets you have in your house, you many want to get more than one so when you’re in the thick of potty training you always have one somewhat near by. We have a few different ones:
- Cocomelon small potty
- Baby Bjorn toilet seat (this one is adjustable for toilet seats)
- Potty Training Seat with Step Stool Ladder (hard to say this early on, but I think I like this one best!)
- Baby Shark toilet seat
Pull-Ups- Some people have different opinions on using pull-ups while potty training, but I think before potty training it’s so important to practice them pulling up & down their pull-ups on their own before using underwear. Mackenzie has been in pull-ups for a while for naps & bedtime so she’s gotten really good at pulling up & pulling down her pull ups on her own.
Underwear- We went to target & I let her pick out underwear with characters she liked in hopes that she would be more willing to wear it if she picked it out with some of her favorite characters on it!
Loose Pants- This is so important & something I used to stress to parents of my students when they were potty training & sending them to school. Make sure you are dressing them in clothes they can easily pull down & up themselves. Jeans & tight pants are just not going to set your kiddo up for success!
Picture Books- We have a few picture books showing characters using the potty & I think they’ve really helped to show her others using the potty.
- Potty Superhero: Get Ready for Big Girl Pants! (there’s a girl and boy version)
- P is for Potty! (Sesame Street) (lift-the-flap)
Timers– These can be used when you’re potty training. It can be helpful to remind yourself to take your kiddo to the bathroom. It can also help your child to realize when it’s time to use the bathroom. A timer on your phone is nice, but if you don’t have your phone on you at all times, a timer can be useful.
Toilet seat to keep in the car– I bought an OXO tot toilet seat that can be used on public toilets or can be used with a bag not in a bathroom. I like that this one can be used many ways and it also comes with a travel bag!
Foldable toilet seat to keep in your diaper bag- I still haven’t found one I love, but a foldable one you can keep in your diaper bag for public restrooms could be really helpful.
Some courses & books that I’ve hear of, but never personally used:
Big Little Feeling Potty Training Course
I haven’t gone through potty training with my own child, just a few students, so there’s a very good chance that I’ve forgotten something so let me know in the comments if I’ve forgotten anything!
