Who Knew Picking a Baby Name Could Be So Difficult
I’m working on my daughter’s birth story (only 9 month’s later) so I figured I’d first write about how we decided on her name and formally introduce her!
I was definitely that girl who had a list of names I liked even before I met my husband. In the Jewish religion we name after the deceased so I was always thinking of names that started with certain letters to honor my grandparents who were no longer here with us.
Once I met my husband and we had been dating for a couple of years, I expanded my list to include the letter’s of his grandparent’s who were no longer here with us as well. That meant we had four letters to work with, M, C, B, and P. Our list was always being worked on and edited, but once I was pregnant we had to get serious about names we liked for a girl since we found out the gender at 11 weeks.
We had shared her gender once we found that out, but we knew her name was the ONE thing we wanted keep to ourselves until she was here. We made the mistake of letting our parents know our dog’s name before we formally adopted her and that was a mess! Our families knew the letter’s we were working with so they would always give us their opinion or suggestions. Funny enough though, they never guessed or suggested the names we landed on!
We had to take a lot of things into account when we were deciding on a name, nicknames being one of them! We had to like the nicknames that went along with her name, so unfortunately that took a lot of names off our list. I think this is a huge thing that needs to be taken into account when picking your child’s name! You don’t want someone calling your child a nickname that you don’t approve of.
We decided on her name sometime during the second trimester. We didn’t order anything with her name on it until late into my third trimester just in case we changed our minds.
Our daughter’s name is Mackenzie Brooke and from the second she arrived her name just felt right! She is named after her paternal great grandfather (Martin) and her maternal great grandfather (Barry). She may only be 9 months old, but she already has tons of nicknames!
Deciding on a name was so tough for us, until we landed on Mackenzie Brooke. We decided on Mackenzie and then had a tough time deciding on a middle name! I might of had my list of names for a LONG time, but I never had names I knew I wanted to use, so it didn’t make choosing a name any easier!
I should note, we only bought only 1 thing with her name on it and we now probably own 50+ things with her name on it. People love to give personalized gifts 🙂
Let me know how you decided on your child’s name below! Are you someone who knew what you were naming your child before they were even conceived or were you the person who had no clue (like me)? Let me know in the comments 🙂
