Incredibly Easy 3 Ingredient Applesauce Using a Food Mill
This is the EASIEST applesauce you’ll ever make as long as you have a food mill. I didn’t own one until last Christmas when I was gifted one by my in-laws so I could specifically make applesauce. It might seem silly to have a piece of equipment for one thing, but if you have a kid who likes applesauce, then a food mill is a must have! You could also use your food mill for grinding or pureeing foods such as sauces or soups. It can be used hot or cold. I’ve only used it to make applesauce, but I’ll be sure to use it in other ways in the future!
My MIL always makes homemade applesauce and it’s always SO delicious, so when I was ready to try to make it myself I texted her for the recipe. And this is what she sent me:
Simple: Wash and core apples, do not peel. Cut into chunks. Put some liquid in a saucepan (water, cider, apple juice). Put apples in saucepan and sprinkle with cinnamon. Cover and cook on medium/low until apples are super soft. Put in food mill to puree and get rid of peels.
I’m always super impressed with how often she makes things without a recipe. I sometimes do this, but only once I’m comfortable making that food. Anyway, I just made it as is, without true measurements and it came out so tasty. Of course, afterwards I wished I had measured since I can never recreate a tasty delicious twice. So I decided I needed to re-do it so I could figure out measurements! Below I’ll walk you through how I made the applesauce:
First, the most important thing to do is to make sure you wash your apples extremely well! You’re going to cook the apples with skin on so this step is extremely important. After you’ve washed your apples you could use an apple corer, but I don’t own one so I just cut the apple off the stem and then cut those pieces into smaller pieces.
I put 3/4 cup of water into the saucepan along with 1.5 tsp of cinnamon. I stirred those together and then placed the apples on top.
I placed the cover on the saucepan and placed it over medium heat. I let the apples cook for 15-20 minutes and then once the apples were extremely soft, I removed the saucepan from the heat.
This is what the apples looked like once they were done cooking, almost mush like!
It’s not the best picture, but that’s because the steam was getting in the way. All you need to do next is place the cooked apples in the food mill and crank the handle, this will separate the apples from their skin.
And voila, homemade applesauce!

3 Ingredient Applesauce
Equipment
- Food Mill
- Rubber Spatula
- Saucepan
- Teaspoons
- Knife
- Cutting board
Ingredients
- 4 Medium Apples
- 3/4 cup Water
- 1.5 tsp Cinnamon optional
Instructions
- Wash the apples really well.
- Cut the apple into chunks, discarding the core.
- Place the water and cinnamon in the saucepan and stir them together.
- Place the cut up apples into the saucepan.
- Cover the saucepan and place over medium heat.
- Let the apples cook until super soft, about 15-20 minutes.
- Once the apples are soft, place them in the food mill.
- There will be extra water left over in the saucepan. Depending on what consistency you are looking for in your applesauce, you can add some, all, or none of the leftover water.
Notes
- You can use apple juice or apple cider instead of water. I’ve only made this for my daughter so I’ve only used water.
- Cinnamon is optional and you can also use less or more than the recipe states.
